Want to grow tomatoes or cucumbers on your porch? It’s

easier than you think. First, you will need a big container

(at least ten gallons) to allow for the rapid growth rate of

these plants. Next, use an organic non-petroleum based

soil mixture to get the best nutrients from your veggies.

These soil mixtures are very light and dry out quickly,

so consider adding either bagged cow manure (great for

tomatoes) or a cured compost, which are very dense and

will slow drainage and provide natural nutrients. Vegetables

grow very quickly so feed themmonthly with an organic slow

release food such as Espoma’s Tomato Tone or Garden Tone.

Also, as the old saying goes, add a Tums to your veggies

so they do not give you heart burn when they get bloom

end rot from a lack of calcium and magnesium or add a

handful of lime to the container when planting. Finally,

place tomato cages early to support your tomatoes so

that you do not to harm the roots later.

Have fun with your containers – let your

imagination go wild and you will be awarded with unique

and beautiful garden accents. And if you choose to plant

veggies and herbs in your containers, happy harvesting.
