This is a trick question; nothing happened to the other
bag. The mathematical reality is that with 5 bags left
over after the hunt, you actually ended up with only 25
bags found during the Easter Egg Hunt. So the key is to
determine how you come up with the number of bags
actually found, i.e., 25.Therefore starting with the initial
30 bags, after returning the 3 bags to the merchants you
are left with 27 bags; then when you deduct the 2 bags
kept for the committee you are left with 25 bags. Or
another way of looking at it is by returning 1 bag to each
merchant they only donated 27 bags (3x9=27) minus
the 2 bags kept by the committee brings you to 25 bags
found during the Easter Egg Hunt.
In other words, instead of adding the
2 bags to 27, it is correct to subtract
the 2 from 27, which gives you 25
bags that were actually used…
or to look at it another way, add
the 3 bags returned to the 27 not
returned, and it accounts for 30,
which is the total number of bags
donated.
