Golf Continued...
The senior participants in
the Andrew Haley Memorial /
Smith Mountain Lake Lions Club
Junior Tournament are frequently
members of high school golf teams.
Those teenagers interact with one
another as individual competitors
and report appreciation for being
able to depend solely on their own
play.
The Girls and Boys Junior
Division and Boys Rookie
Division participants gain valuable
experience playing in a Tournament
governed by USGA and VSGA
rules. These novice golfers may not
count every stroke when they play
casually with their friends. Their
parents may give them “mulligans”
when they play as a family.
However, these youngsters relish
the challenge they undertake when
they play by official golf rules.
The SML Lions Junior Golf
Committee has scheduled the
2014 Andrew Haley Memorial
SML Lions Club Junior Golf
Tournament for July 21 and 22.
The Tournament begins this year
at The Mariner’s Landing Golf
and Country Club on Monday and
will continue the second day’s
competition at Waterfront Country
Club on Tuesday.
All golfers compete for trophies
and golf equipment. All participants
between 16 and 18 are eligible
to apply for the Andrew Haley
Memorial Scholarship, a $750.00
college scholarship that the Haley
Trust awards in compliance with
USGA Rules of Amateur Status.

At Smith Mountain Lake, any
young person who has the golf
skills to walk 18 holes of golf
over two challenging courses and
shoot a viable score is welcome.
Those girls and boys are beginning
a sport that can provide life-long
satisfaction. They know with Ben
Hogan that the most important shot
in golf is the next one.
