can bring to a kid. We know this because
our own maiden trips are what had most of Ministries, Boys and Girls Club of South
us hooked. We want to share that feeling
with as many kids as possible.
Our events will place a child 8 to
12 years old, along with a parent, relative,
or responsible guardian, on a boat with
a licensed professional guide. A club
member will be on board to assist the
young anglers with life jackets and proper
fishing techniques. They will also educate
them on the need for boating safety and
conservation of our lake and fishery. Our
professional guides will use their skills to
locate the fish and help the kids to hook
them. By the end of each 2 to 3 hour trip,
we hope that each child will have the
opportunity to set a hook into one of the
lake’s most sought after fish, a striped bass.
Our eligible children are vetted through
20 Discover Smith Mountain Lake FALL 2022
our local charities, such as Lake Christian
West Virginia, and SML Good Neighbors.
The smile that appears on a kid’s
face while catching their first fish is truly
unforgettable. As co-organizer of this
event, I can honestly say: the joy of seeing
that smile is most rewarding. If you would
