run through your head, like ‘Will I make the
right shot placement when the moment of
truth comes? Have I practiced enough? What
if I won’t have a successful season?’”
One thing that sets Jacob apart from his forbears is his
avid interest in videography, which he now applies to
his avocation as a hunter. This interest was sparked by
partly by his feeling that life is too short not to capture
it with a camera, and partly by his intense desire to
share his love of what he does with others.
This prompted him to save up his money and purchase
video equipment and editing software, so that he
could share his experiences with others. Among other
reasons, he believes that Virginia gets little recognition
as a venue for hunting wild game. Although there are
many great hunting areas in North America, Jacob is
determined to showcase Virginia, and the Appalachian
Mountains in particular, as both a challenging and
rewarding place to hunt for game.
To that end, Roberts has taken on a serious mission.
While driving toward Smith Mountain Lake one day,
he spotted a sign for the Blackwater Bowhunters
(see Discover Smith Mountain Lake, December 2012
Issue). He was immediately drawn in, and chatted with
a few of the members. Before long, he was attending
events, and discussing the possibility of producing
bow hunting videos. This had also been a goal of the
club, so they put their heads together, and decided to
create their own TV show: The Virginia Bowhunter.
The show is aimed at sharing their dedication to the
sport, in a realistic depiction of the challenges and
rewards of what they do, culminating at the dinner
table…
“People can go out to the grocery store to feed their
family and get their meat. They really don’t think
about where their meat comes from, but we hunters
really think hard about our protein and providing
for our families. When you go out there day after
day, week after week, you begin to wonder if it is
worth it. Your body becomes weak and your mind is
going off the deep end. You think to your self should
I pack up and go home or should I keep pressing
forward to harvest that pope and young buck at 40
yards? Its one hell of a struggle, but at the end once
you have experienced more than what most others
will experience their whole life, in the end it will all
be worth it; you’ll have your downfalls, but most of
the trips will be very rewarding… When the hunt is
done and you have a plate full of organic meat that you
brought home, you can sit there and smile and think
about all the adventures that you went through to get
that wild game here on this table.”
Virginia Bowhunter is scheduled to air on Carbon
TV, an online distribution outlet for outdoor-themed
shows. The planned launch is for some time next
year. For now, it remains a social media offering on
YouTube, Facebook, and Vimeo. The show is produced
by Landon & Sons Media.

to myself that the beauty that I’m seeing now I
can show to others without them being here.”
