His research shows that only roughly seven
percent of the population votes in primaries.
That translates into ninety-three percent of the
population that does not participate. If voters
want to vote out their incumbents, they can do
so in primary elections. Thus, they do not have
to violate party loyalty, or personal conviction, to
make a change. Furthermore, it gives them a real
say in shaping the direction and agenda of the
respective party.
He also learned that 90 percent of all voters get
their information on candidates from radi and
TV commercials. What disturbs him most about
this is his discovery that a Supreme Court ruling
found that it is perfectly acceptable for political
candidates to lie about one another in their
advertising.
“Here’s another interesting statistic: ninety
percent of the people who vote get their
information from commercials… so right off the
bat, ninety percent of the people… are basing
their vote on ignorance… coupled with only seven
percent turning out in the primaries, that’s our
problem.”
He doesn’t exempt himself from culpability in
that regard. “Until I ran in 2010, I never knew
what a primary was, I never paid attention to it…
I voted in the general election for years and years,
and thought I was doing my civic duty… and I got
my information from commercials; I never did
any homework or research.”
Rather than tilt at windmills, McKelvey seeks
a fairly simple solution: “What’s an easy way to
turn this thing around? Well… it’s just simply to
go to the primary and vote out the incumbent.
We know that Congress, as an entity, is not doing
its job.”
To that end, Jim has wrapped his well known
“campaign bus” with the slogan “Term Limits
Now”, and is launching an effort to motivate
voters to become active in the primaries. Since so
many voters rely exclusively on commercials, he
plans to run his own commercials that carry this
message.
“I’ve decided my number one goal right now is to
get as many people unseated as possible, to send
a real message whether it be to Richmond or D.C.,
that we’re done with it… if we can accomplish
that, it will empower people (to think) ‘My God,
my vote does count’.”
McKelvey envisions a world in which we return
to the basic founding principles of our country,
wherein citizen legislators reluctantly take on the
duty of office, for a term or two, and then return
home to get back to business. It’s similar to how
many of us view jury duty: a duty that, while it
may be inconvenient to fulfill, is important to the
proper execution of our system of government.
“The person you want to elect is not the person
who wants that position. You want to find the
person who doesn’t want it. And then you have
to convince them to run and then elect them,
because those people are going to do what has
to get done, and then go home. The person who
wants the position wants to change things,
whether for personal gain, or whatever.”
Jim can’t do this alone. He is putting his own
effort and money behind it, and vows that any
contributions will be used to further the cause,
with nobody drawing a paycheck from it. He
invites all who are interested, regardless of party
affiliation, to join him.
“If anybody’s interested, I’m over at The Plaza…
and I need help… I’m the sole supporter of this
organization at this point… let’s open the door
for good people to step in there, and make a
difference.”
