were also looking for him because of forgeries of
checks against McWaters’ account, picked him
up from Roanoke for questioning. During this
questioning, he confessed to the murder. He was
ultimately sentenced to death, and after nearly 8
years on death row, Savino was executed by lethal
injection on July 17, 1996. He was 38 years old.
Savenac thus passed on to Robert McWaters,
Thomas’s older brother and heir, who was a farmer
in Connecticut. In 1991, he sold it to William
and Rebecca Mays. He had just retired from the
University of Illinois at Chicago, where he had
served as Vice Chancellor of Administration. The
Mays renamed the farm “Savenac”, which brings
us to the current owners.
Drew and Elisabeth Flynn, a handsome young
couple, bought Savenac Farm 10 years ago.
“I’ve raised four children, 12 chickens, 2 horses, 2
cats and 2 dogs here,” Drew says with a nostalgic
smile.
He’s a geologist and a conservationist, and
has a huge soft spot for old houses. He advises
companies about environmental cleanup, which
means lots of traveling. The Flynns rent 80 acres
of pasture to a neighboring beef farmer; the
remaining land is all woods, where the family has
hiked and camped over the years.
Skinnel’s Creek flows through the property, and
Drew has made sure its waters are protected from
pollution by an easement barrier of trees. This
easement means that no additional houses may
be built or changes to the farm land may occur,
forever.
Drew and Elisabeth met while students at James
Madison University. Elisabeth teaches home
bound, special education children in Bedford
County. Drew was born in Singapore, and traveled
most of the Orient, until he came to Virginia to go
to college and “put down roots”.
Although the Flynns have relished their years at
Savenac Farm, they have decided that it’s time to
move on - a business decision. They need to be
closer to an airport with International flights. So,
Savenac Farm is for sale. But, a piece of the Flynns,
like all the owners before them, will remain just a
few short miles southeast of the town of Bedford,
in the embrace of a stately manor that has heard
the laughter of children, the cries of despair and
the hope and dreams of brides. Like all old girls,
it has a history.
