          that combines science, technology,

          engineering and math,” explained

Sharon Sicher, a teacher at the school

who, along with Cris Perdue, principal

of the school, has headed up the

extracurricular team project for the past

three years. Under their guidance, the

local students have earned first place

          recognitions in several categories of

competition at the regional level each

of the three years they competed.

“In the bigger schools the Lego

League would be made up of only top

          tier academic students,” says Sharon,

“but since our school is so small we

          had a range of aptitudes.”

he credits this mix for the

wonderful creativeness of the skit and

props and the fact that the team worked

so well together. She added that this

year the students did their best ever in

          the robot competition.

          The students start each year’s

project by deciding on a specific event

based on an assigned theme. This

          year’s theme was “Nature’s Fury”.

          After some lively discussions and

          painstaking research, they decided they

          would depict rescue efforts following

a volcanic eruption which left planes

crippled by clouds of ash and smoke.

Next they had to pick a community

that could identify with such a disaster.

          This required even more research.

They decided to focus on both the

          Delta Airline community and London,

England – home to Heathrow Airport.

A volcanic eruption in Iceland would

impact not just the safety of air travel

but it would create economic problems
