anniversary ceremonies, only a handful
of World War II veterans were present.
After seven decades, most of the few
who survive are in their 90s. Their French
hosts, who freely express their gratitude
for their service, warmly receive them.
The members of BIA are also welcomed
with open arms.
“My impression of the people in
Normandy is… They act like and feel
like the war was like six months ago; it’s
so much a part of their life… They still
live it,” Lib remarks. “If you said you
were American, they’d give you a hug…
and if you said you were from Virginia,
they’d give you another hug… and if you
said you were from Bedford, they’d give
you two hugs.”
This year’s ceremonies ran the
gamut from celebratory to solemn. The
participants gathered on the beach at 6
AM on June 6th to form a human chain,
which began the day’s itinerary. Stops
included the Vierville Monument, the
American Cemetery in Colleville, the
cathedral at Bayeux, the St. Laurent
Monument, and of course, the 29th
Division Monument in Vierville.
Charlie’s voice takes on a somber tone
as he recounts the memorial services.
“We laid a lot of wreaths… a lot of
flowers… said a lot of words… “
The ceremony at the Bayeux Cathedral
was held in order to “christen” a newly
cast bell that was commissioned by the
Bishop of Bayeux-Lisieux to mark the
70th Anniversary. The 1,100 pound
bronze ‘Peace Bell’ was cast at the
bell foundry at Villedieu-les-Poêles, a
community with a centuries-old bell
making tradition. During an ecumenical
service, the bell was blessed in front of
a by-invitation-only assembly of civilian
and inter-religious personalities.
In keeping with French tradition,
the bell has a “godmother” – Queen
Elizabeth II of Great Britain – and nine
junior godfathers and godmothers,
children from each of the Allied nations.
The junior godparents were chosen on
the basis of youth as well as nationality;
the idea being to ensure that the D-Day
legacy will endure for decades to come.
Sperry Grills, a young nursing student
from Bedford, has the honor of being the
American junior godparent. Her name is
cast in the surface of the bell along with
those of her fellow godparents. Sperry
and her mother, Lisa Persinger, are both
proud members of Bedford International
Alliance.
Veterans of the Normandy Landings,
most of whom are now in their nineties,
joined Prince Charles and the Duchess of
Cornwall, British Prime Minister David
Cameron and his wife, Samantha, and
the French Prime Minister, Manuel Valls,
along with local Bishop Jean Claude
Boulanger of Bayeux-Lisieux.
Pope Francis sent a message to be read
out at the ceremony, in which he called
upon people to remember the sacrifices
of the soldiers participating in the D-Day
landings.
At the end of the ecumenical
ceremony, Cardinal André Vingt-Trois,
the archbishop of Paris blessed or
“baptized” the cathedral’s new Peace
Bell in the centre of the nave. Sprinkling
the bell with holy water, he pronounced a
blessing over it.
