CELEBRATING
YEARS
25
named the bell Thérèse-Bénedicte after
St. Thérèse-Bénedicte of the Cross. St
Thérèse, born Edith Stein, was a Jewish
philosopher and convert who died at
Auschwitz. In 1999, Pope John Paul II
canonized her.
Afterwards the bell was rung for the
first time, by the hand of a 94-year-old
British D-Day veteran.
The main ceremony was held at
Colleville-sur-Mer at 10 AM on the
6th, and included speeches by President
Obama and President Francois Hollande
of France. The American cemetery at
Colleville-sur-Mer is where Bedford
Hoback and 10 of his comrades were
laid to rest. The next day, after the large
crowds had dissipated and the pageantry
was finished, they made their visit to lay
the flowers.
Lib was impressed with the overall
welcoming attitude of the French people,
as well as the ways in which they
continue to show their appreciation for
our fallen soldiers. “A lot of them adopt
a grave of an American… and they put
flowers on it for birthdays, anniversaries,
and Christmas…”
While there, Charlie took note of an
old C-47, the military version of the
Douglas DC-3, which bore the marking
“W7”. Owned by the National Warplane
Museum, and based in Geneseo, NY,
“Whiskey 7” was the lead plane of the
37th Troop Carrier Squadron. This
aircraft dropped paratroopers from the
82nd Airborne Division near St. Mere
Eglise, France in the early hours of the
invasion. For the anniversary celebration,
Whiskey 7 was tasked with dropping
members of the Liberty Jump Team
over the original D-Day drop zones. The
museum had raised $250,000 in order to
finance the plane’s participation in the
festivities, and sent her over to Normandy
with a flight crew.
BIA’s 10-day D-Day itinerary included
some time in Paris, and also took them
to Iceland, where they spent three days
touring the sights. Their air carrier of
choice was Iceland Air, so it seemed
like a natural diversion. While staying in
Reykjavik, Charlie noted the proximity
of the Reykjavík airport. “The taxiway is
right out the back side of the hotel,” he
chuckles.
An avid aviation enthusiast, and a pilot
himself, Charlie couldn’t resist getting an
even closer look. “I was startled when I
saw Whiskey 7 taxi up, right there!”
He boldly approached the flight crew,
who were exhausted after their last flight
leg, from Scotland to Reykjavik, on their
long journey back to New York. With
child-like enthusiasm, Charlie peppered
them with questions.
“We’re gonna leave at 7:30 in the
morning, Mr. Walker, and if you’re here,
we’ll give you the full tour.”
Danged if Charlie didn’t keep that
appointment, taking note of Whiskey 7’s
obviously well-maintained airframe and
engines.
The final day of the adventure was a
tour of the Blue Lagoon, which Charlie
describes as ten to fifteen acres of
foaming white water, at approximately
100-degree temperatures. It is a natural
spa inwhich visitors immerse themselves,
and it features a waterside bar. “Disney
would be proud,” he chuckles. “What an
operation!”
Charlie reminds us locals that we enjoy
a tremendous opportunity to delve into
the amazing story of D-Day, since the
Memorial is right in our own back yard.
He points out that surviving veterans still
share their experiences in presentations
on Memorial Day and D-Day, and the
staff is always unearthing bits of “living
history” – letters and artifacts from now-
deceased soldiers who were on that
beach more than 70 years ago, fighting
for freedom.
It makes a fellow proud to be from
Bedford.
