Sparrow Bridge
Last issue’s puzzle had a tractor trailer truck driving across a mile long bridge capable of supporting exactly
the stated weight of the vehicle and its cargo. Halfway across the bridge, a sparrow weighing two ounces
landed on the truck, and we asked you to tell us what the result would be, and to explain your answer.
The first correct response was submitted by Paul Greier of Moneta:
I say that nothing will happen. The reason is that for the truck to be able to make it half way across (1 mile),
he will have burned up well in excess of 2 ounces of fuel
... so that the bridge weight limit will not have been
exceeded by the weight of the sparrow. Good thing
that it wasn’t a goose or a loon!
I believe that the reason for the cross-wind info is just
to make sure that there is no tail-wind, which could
appreciably increase the truck’s fuel mileage.
