Here is last issue’s brain puzzle:
A group of friends in a retirement home have been out of the workaday
world for so long, that they've forgotten the day of the week. The following
conversation ensues.
Darryl: What's the day? I don't think it is Thursday, Friday or Saturday.
Tracy: Well that doesn't narrow it down much. Yesterday was Sunday.
Melissa: Yesterday wasn't Sunday, tomorrow is Sunday.
Ben: The day after tomorrow is Saturday.
Adrienne: The day before yesterday was Thursday.
Susie: Tomorrow is Saturday.
David: I know that the day after tomorrow is not Friday.
If only one person's statement is true, what day of the week is it?
Our winners are Vicki and Skip Larrington!
Here is their solution:
Easy problem this quarter – today is Wednesday.
Darryl says it could be Sunday, Monday, Tuesday, or Wednesday.
Tracy says it is Monday.
Melissa says it is Saturday.
Our winners are Vicki
Ben says it is Thursday.
Adrienne says it is Saturday. and Skip Larrington!
Susie says it is Friday.
David says it is Sunday, Monday, Tuesday, Thursday, Friday, or Saturday.
The key is David who says it is every day except Wednesday. So his assertion
duplicates every assertion of all the previous people with the exception of
Darryl – who includes Wednesday as a possibility.
So, the day that is posited only once as today is Wednesday.
