LAST ISSUE’S BRAIN TEASER:
Four prisoners are attempting to escape by digging a tunnel to freedom.
They are all afraid of the dark.
They have made a crude lamp that will stay lit for 12 minutes. The original plan was to make
the tunnel wide enough for all four of them to escape side by side, using the one lamp.
However, the guards have become suspicious, and the prisoners know that an inspection is
planned for the next morning, which will likely reveal their tunnel.
As it is right now, only two of them may escape through the tunnel at one time, moving at the
speed of the slower one.
The youngest, strongest one can make it through the tunnel in one minute
The next one needs 2 minutes
The remaining two are older and slower, needing 4 and 5 minutes, respectively
These men are all loyal to one another, and none will leave any of the others behind.
How can they all escape tonight, using only that single crude lamp for the light that they so
desperately need?
Last issue’s puzzle was a simple one:
First the two youngest and strongest - 2 minutes.
The youngest comes back - 3 minutes
Both oldest ones go to the second youngest - 8 minutes.
Second youngest comes to youngest - 10 minutes
and they both get to the older ones - 12 minutes.
