Old Rag is another popular hiking
trail on theAT. It is located
in Shenandoah National
Park in northern Virginia.
It offers many glorious
panoramic views, along
with a “rock scramble”
that requires some hand
over hand climbing and
climbing through cracks
in the rock and a cave.
The trail is marked with
blue blazers that hikers are
advised to follow as there
are several false trails that
lead to overlooks. Old
Rag is typically crowded
with hikers so you might
want to plan on arriving as
early as 7 am to avoid the
crowds. Also go at a time
of year when there is no
ice on the trail.
The Peaks of Otter
offers multiple hiking
trails. Two of the toughest
are Sharp Top and Flat
Top, which can be hiked
separately or combined
for a total hike of 9.8
miles. Sharp Top is
the most popular hike
probably because of
its close proximity to the Lodge and
the Blue Ridge Parkway. Flat Top is
considered a great place to spend the
weekend (either at the Lodge or the
nearby campground) because there will
be fewer hikers.
Hiking is a great way to stay fit.
For example, a 175 pound person
would burn 3,024 calories hiking Old
Rag and 2,436 calories hiking Sharp
Top and Flat Top at the Peaks of Otter.
Hiking the AT or any portion of it can
and should be thoroughly researched
Online. There are also several hiking
clubs in the area for those interested.
Paul says his personal goal in
hiking the AT trail is threefold: To
never let age be the determining factor
in pursuing a dream; to walk with God
in his backyard; and to raise awareness
and revenue for Lake Christian
Ministries (LCM), a non-profit, non-
denominational charity that provides
food, clothing, household items and
emergency financial aid for those in
need, the majority of which are seniors
and single mothers with young children.
“I’m asking friends, family and
the community to make a pledge to
LCM for every mile I walk,” Paul says,
adding that 100 percent of all money
pledged will go to the
local ministry. To make
your pledge of $.01, $.03,
$.05, or $.07 per mile
($22, $65, $109, $152)
please send your pledge
amount along with your
name and address to Lake
Christian
Ministries,
