Imagine if fish could swim out
the top of your aquarium, up to the
ceiling, across the room, and then
down into another tank. Before you
go marveling at modern technology,
you should know that the first such
system was patented in the U.S.
in 1877. The ones pictured here
are made of acrylic plastic, which
is commonly used as a material in
custom-built aquariums.
The tube is completely sealed,
except for the openings at each end,
which are submerged below the tank
water levels. Think of it as a large
drinking straw in a glass of water.
No doubt, you’ve observed that you
can seal the top of the straw with
your finger, and then lift the straw
out of the glass, keeping the water
in the straw at its original level until
you let the air back in.
The tube is filled by sucking the
air out of it, while simultaneously
maintaining the water levels in
the tanks. Eventually, all the air is
removed, and the tube is filled with
water.
A small pump transfers water
through a separate pipe from one
tank to the other. As the tank water
levels change (one rises and the
other falls), flow is induced through
the tube by the force of gravity.
Thus, the tank filters clean the water
in the tube. Algae is removed using
cleaning magnets for acrylic tanks.
