Hunt
This past summer was the most
exciting yet for both Discover
Smith Mountain Lake and WSLK
Lake Radio 880! We revived
the popular “Jewels of the Lake”
Treasure Hunt, with some changes
and improvements.
Every week, we moved the
entry box to a different location,
and gave clues to its whereabouts
on the radio station. Anyone who
found the box could make an entry
for that week. This made them
eligible for that week’s prize, and
all entries would also be eligible for
the ultimate prize, to be awarded
by drawing from all valid entries at
an end-of-summer event at Jake’s
Place.
The weekly prizes were all valued
at $100 or greater, and the Grand
Prize was a brand new Yamaha
Wave Runner VX Sport. Lots of
folks were very excited, because it
only took solving a single clue to
become eligible to win the Grand
Prize, but they could improve their
odds of winning by solving more
clues and having multiple entries.
Thus, it did not require solving the
entire puzzle to be eligible to win.
As it happened, our winner was
someone who played every week,
and solved every single clue. We
had some unexpected excitement
during the week or so that most
people were without power at
the lake, but once electricity was
restored, the contest resumed.
At the finale, we drew the first
name… the person whose name
was drawn was not present, and that
was a requirement of winning this
awesome prize. Tension mounted
as we drew four more names, all
of whom also had not bothered to
show up. Lisa Wehausen of Union
Hall was very grateful for their lack
of interest, as hers was the sixth
name drawn. She is now the proud
owner of a new Yamaha Wave
Runner, from Discover Smith
Mountain Lake magazine, and her
friends at WSLK Lake Radio 880!
